Online-Nachrichten 6. Mai 1999 Society for Acupuncture Research Am Samstag den 22. Mai findet in der University of California , Irvine, Der Kongress "New Directions in the Scientific Exploration of Acupuncture". statt. The mission of the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) is to promote scientifically sound inquiries into the clinical efficacy, physiological mechanisms, patterns of use and theoretical foundations of acupuncture, herbal therapy and other modalities of Oriental Medicine (OM). Since its first annual symposium in January, 1993, SAR has served as a focal point for practitioners, researchers, health care policy makers and students interested in conducting, improving and disseminating what is broadly described as OM research. SAR aims to achieve its mission by:·offering assistance in study design to those embarking on acupuncture research and providing an annual forum for the presentation and discussion of research findings. Educating the broad-spectrum health care community, both practitioners and the people they serve, on research findings and their relevance to clinical practice. In addition to its annual meetings, SAR's accomplishments include responding to a commission from the National Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to prepare a summary of positive-outcome clinical trials of acupuncture. This project was completed in 1996, by SAR Board members S. Birch and R. Hammerschlag, with the publication of Acupuncture Efficacy: A Compendium of Controlled Clinical Trials. Seventy clinical trials were summarized in which acupuncture was compared to placebo controls, or to standard care. SAR was also actively involved in the planning and presentation of the 1997 Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. SAR has recently entered into an agreement with a forthcoming journal, Clinical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, CAOM, to publish proceedings of the Society's annual meetings."
