Japanese Acupunture - A Clinical Guide
von Stephen Birch und Junko Ida ist vor kurzem erschienen.

Im folgenden finden Sie eine Zusammenfassung des Inhalts.
The basic goal of this book is to present a number of specific techniques used by acupuncturists in Japan in great technical detail, so that their use can be improved. The authors have drawn from their own rich clinical experience, the teachings and experiences of their teachers in Japan, and a wide range of textbooks and articles. Many of these instructors and published works are highly specialized in the particular area that they practice and write about. For example, much of the description on moxa comes from the work of moxa specialists, practitioners that use moxibustion almost exclusively. Much of the descriptions on cupping, comes from the work of cupping specialists who do cupping exclusively on all patients. Likewise, much of the description on bloodletting comes from the pioneering work of two doctors who specialized in the use of bloodletting on all their patients. This degree of specialization affords a unique depth if clinical detail in the proper and effective uses of those techniques. The book is also richly illustrated with excellent photographs of all the techniques.

The first chapter gives a brief historical and modern overview of acupuncture in Japan. The next chapter describes how the book can be used with reference to some treatment systems, and describes a number of basic but important theories in acupuncture. The third chapter gives a brief introduction to the art of palpation in Japanese acupuncture. The fourth and longest chapter describes in detail the nine needles from the Ling Shu, their basic uses and methods of application. In particular it focusses on the gooshin or filiform needle used in most modern practice. Considerable detail is given about the use of the needle and tube and different needling techniques. The "moxa on the handle of the needle" technique is also described in great detail, making this a safer and easier to use technique. The fifth chapter describes the use of moxibustion. The first and larger part details the common direct moxa method used in Japan, then the warm moxa and "ibuki" moxa techniques are described. Again there is a wealth of clinical detail about techniques and uses. The sixth chapter describes the use of the Japanese intradermal needles in some detail. The seventh chapter describes the use of the press-tack needle, the eighth the use of the press-spheres, both in significant detail.

The ninth chapter describes the use of cupping, the tenth the use of bloodletting, both in more detail than one would imagine possible.

In all of these chapters a wealth of information is given about techniques, precautions, contraindications, proper doses, sample treatment strategies, etc. The eleventh chapter describes a simple tool that can be used for home therapy, Manaka's wooden hammer and needle.

The twelfth chapter gives a broad range of case histories drawn from the clinicians whose works are used throughout the book, showing the use of single and combined techniques, and based on the experience of the authors. There are also appendices cataloguing more details about the modern practice of acupuncture in Japan.

Eine deutsche Übersetzung ist in Vorbereitung und wird voraussichtlich Ende 2000 im ML-Verlag erscheinen.
